National Self-Represented Litigants Project

A directory of lawyers (as well as paralegals, and other professionals offering therapeutic support and assistance) offering self-represented litigants (SRLs) affordable assistance, primarily in the form of unbundled legal or limited-scope services (unbundling).

Library services

Courthouse Libraries BC

Provides legal information services to the public via a network of libraries in BC courthouses. You’re encouraged to call or email before visiting as they can provide many services this way and can save you time. The libraries provide access to staff expertise, print and digital legal collections, and public computers.

Legal Advocacy Program

Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society

Helps agricultural workers with multiple barriers deal with legal appeals and complaints related to employment insurance, WorkSafeBC, employment standards, and more. They also help with employment-related disability cases, tenancy issues, and more. They offer legal representation and information, maintain resources, and do referrals.

Legal advocacy program

Opportunities Career Services Society

Provides legal advocacy to low-income residents in Campbell River and the surrounding area. They can help with disability benefits, seniors’ benefits, residential tenancy disputes, and consumer debt issues. Volunteer lawyers are available, by appointment only, to people who can’t afford a lawyer.

Law Students’ Legal Advice Program (LSLAP)

Free legal advice and representation on issues such as criminal summary offences, civil resolution, small claims, residential tenancy, WorkSafeBC, consumer protection, EI, CPP and Old-Age Pension, wills and estates, and immigration and refugee issues. They may draft certain types of legal documents such as demand letters, wills, and more.

For when you need help with family law issues that affect your everyday life. They can help assess what you need, provide information about your legal and related issues, and refer you to the services that are available for your situation. They offer self-help services, needs assessment, dispute resolution and mediation options, and more.

Housing Law Clinic (direct representation)

Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre (TRAC)

If you're eligible, the housing law clinic lawyer provides free legal advice and/or representation if you would like a Supreme Court Judge to review your Residential Tenancy Branch decision for a serious error or unfairness, if you need help enforcing an RTB monetary order, or if your housing situation falls outside the Residential Tenancy Act.

First Nations and Metis Outreach Program

The Law Centre at the University of Victoria

May provide legal advice, assistance, and representation to First Nations and Metis clients who live in the Capital Regional District and who can’t afford a lawyer. Staff work with First Nations communities and organizations to provide accessible, holistic, legal services to their members. They also help with access to the Human Rights Clinic.

The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch (CBABC)

Online legal directory where you can find legal services in your community by searching for the location, area of practice, and language spoken to find all lawyers that meet those criteria. You can also find a specific lawyer or law firm if you know the name.

Find a notary by searching by name, location, or language. Notaries provide a broad range of legal services, including affidavits for all documents you need at a Public Registry, authorization of minor child travel, certified true copies of documents, powers of attorney, and will preparation.
